On Wednesday, The New York Times initiated legal prosecutions before the Federal Court in New York against OpenAI, the inventor of ChatGPT, as well as Microsoft, its most prominent investor, on charges of copyright infringement .  

A spokeswoman for the newspaper told AFP, “As stated in the complaint, Microsoft and OpenAI used our work to develop and market their artificial intelligence products without obtaining permission .”  

According to the complaint, the newspaper estimates the damage it sustained “in the billions of dollars .”  

The defendants’ generative AI relied on massive learning models created by copying and using millions of copyrighted Times articles,” she added .
